The creator of Dragon Quest, Yuji Horiihas racked up numerous accolades over the years, thanks to his work on this iconic RPG series.

With hundreds of millions of copies sold worldwide and an essential status in Japan, the Dragon Quest franchise is today recognized as a cornerstone of video game culture. And now Horii’s work on this series is receiving particularly prestigious recognition.

Yuji Horii was honored by the “Cultural Affairs Commissioner’s Award” awarded by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. This prize is awarded by the Commissioner for Cultural Affairs to individuals who have achieved remarkable achievements in the artistic and cultural field.

Horii spoke on social media about the award, sharing his thoughts on the honor. Here are his comments:

“It was an honor to receive this award from the Commissioner of the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Thinking back, about 40 years ago, games were blamed for crimes and frowned upon by many. But after all these years, they are finally recognized as a culture in their own right by our country. It’s very moving. I count on your continued support for the video game industry. »
