It was in front of a packed room full of emotions that the honorable judge Jacques Ladouceur pronounced the sentence of the accused this morning, at the Rouyn-Noranda courthouse.
So 5 and a half years in prison await Keven Montigny, as well as an 8-year suspension of his driving license.
A rather disappointing sentence for the defense, who was hoping for an 18-month sentence, as well as a suspension of her driving license.
Remember that Keven Montigny caused the death of Yannik Duval and seriously injured Vicky Beaumier, the latter’s spouse, in a road accident on the night of May 21 to 22, 2022.
On the evening of the tragedy, the driver had a blood alcohol level almost twice the legal limit and a cannabis intoxication level four times higher than the law.
Between tears and relief expressed by the family of the two victims, Judge Ladouceur recalled some aggravating facts which influenced his decision.
Notably the fact that Keven Montigny was not his first serious traffic offense.
And also that the latter had consciously decided to take his vehicle while impaired, despite the warnings of his partner at the time.
Judge Ladouceur also put forward certain mitigating factors.
Such as the fact that the accused had entered a guilty plea, the fact that he felt remorse and that he would have to live with the psychological and physical after-effects of his actions for the rest of his life.
Following the rendering of the sentence, the judge spoke directly to the accused to inform him of the dramatic aspect of his crime and its impacts.
He continued by telling him that the sentence was intended to deter possible dangerous behavior on the roads.
He finished by telling her that the best way to respect the victims is to make sure not to repeat these same mistakes.
In tears, Keven Montigny agreed to Judge Ladouceur’s requests before being escorted by two special constables outside the courtroom.
Keven Montigny who will have ample time to reflect on the seriousness of his actions.
He who will have to spend five and a half years behind bars.
