In the United States and after nearly fifteen years of investigation into macabre discoveries of corpses of prostitutes on the beaches of Long Island, east of New York, Rex Heuermann, a New York architect and father, was charged Tuesday with a seventh murder. Already accused of six homicides committed between 1993 and 2010, Rex Heuermann once again pleaded not guilty during his hearing in Riverhead court.
This new accusation concerns the murder of Valerie Mack, a 24-year-old young woman found dead in 2000. Her remains were discovered in two stages: first in a wood the same year, then in 2011 along the beaches of Gilgo Beach , near other victims. During the hearing, Suffolk County Prosecutor Ray Tierney praised the progress of the investigation: “The families are grateful for this small moment of respite that our task force can provide them,” adding that “the “The lives of these women matter.”
Bodies found in the dunes
Between 2010 and 2011, the remains of eleven human bodies, including nine women, a man and a little girl, were found scattered in the dunes and bramble scrub along Gilgo Beach and Oak Beach. These discoveries deeply shocked the local population and frustrated investigators, who were unable to identify a suspect for years.
The investigation took a turn in 2022 when police established a link between a vehicle, last seen with a missing victim, and Rex Heuermann. From then on, DNA evidence and phone analyzes were collected, some from his home in Massapequa Park, located not far from where the bodies were found. The authorities are continuing their investigations to try to link Rex Heuermann to the eleven victims before the opening of his trial in 2025.
