The events start on Saturday around 3 p.m. in Wormhout. According to the Dunkirk public prosecutor’s office, a 29-year-old man was killed in front of his home by several gunshots. The gendarmerie, notified around 3:15 p.m., discovered the victim in the courtyard of his home. An hour later, around 4 p.m., two security agents aged 33 and 37 were shot by the same murderer.

Loon-Plage is located twenty-five minutes by car from Wormhout. It was not far from there that the last two men were also killed, a few minutes later.

The main suspect, a 22-year-old man, went around 5:20 p.m., two hours after the first crime, to the Ghyvelde gendarmerie, a few hundred meters from the family home (and twenty minutes from Loon-Plage). He then accused himself of the five murders committed and was immediately placed in police custody, then interviewed by investigators.

A triple indictment

Kept for 72 hours, Paul D., the main suspect, ended up being indicted on Tuesday, December 17, for assassinations concerning the first three victims. For the other two, he is being prosecuted for “murders preceded, accompanied or followed by another crime”. Finally, he was indicted for violence with a weapon.

These facts would have taken place at the same time as the last two murders. “The criminal journey raises questions. It is rare both in terms of the nature of the facts and the number of victims,” she said during a press conference on Tuesday.

Victims more or less linked to the suspect

The first victim, Paul Dekeister, was the head of a repair company and father of two children. According to 3 Hauts-de-France, he could be the former employer of the main suspect. The municipality of Wormhout deplored, on Facebook, “the assassination of a business manager” which leaves “bereaved families and devastated loved ones”.

They seemed to be well known to Dunkirk residents, having had to secure balls and other carnivals in the region. Marc Lehmus was also a member of the Loon-Plage motorcycle club.

Finally, the two men killed last, aged 19 and 30, were probably of Iranian nationality. According to the prefecture, they were two migrants. “Two of the victims were exiled people who were surviving in one of the informal camps in the region and had the hope of reaching England,” reports the Utopia 56 association.

A killer with unclear motivations

One of the immense unknowns that will now have to be resolved concerns the profile of the killer. What are the motivations of this 22-year-old man, who “is unknown to the police and the judicial authorities”, according to the prosecutor, but who hid several firearms in his car? According to her, he was fully aware of his actions and his discernment cannot be refuted.

According to BFM, the alleged assassin was discreet in nature. Originally from Ghyvelde and unemployed, “he was never outside, while we were all the time. We didn’t really see it. I think he was all alone, withdrawn. I never saw anyone go to his house,” explains Johan, a neighbor. Owner of several registered weapons, he belongs to a shooting club.

Answer

He had completed a period of training and professionalization contract without a dispute between them having been detected until then. The suspect “resigned from his mission before the end of his training, apparently […] to follow training, I believe, in road transit,” said Patrick Guerbette, founder of ECS, during a speech Tuesday afternoon, according to West France.
