“A good wolf is a dead wolf”: two political figures from South Aveyron targeted at their home by a sign

Camille Valabrègue and Kateline Durand, politically active in South Aveyron, filed a complaint following this discovery in front of their home.

The discovery was bitter for Kateline Durand and Camille Valabrègue. The two women, political figures from South Aveyron, had the unpleasant surprise of finding a handwritten sign in front of their home “1 good wolf is 1 dead wolf”.

For Camille Valabrègue, notably a candidate in the last municipal elections in but also in the legislative elections, the discovery was made in the early morning. “When I left home at 7 a.m., there was nothing. My neighbor came ten minutes after me and he was the one who saw it,” she says. Kateline Durand discovered the sign during the night.

“It’s not very pleasant, concedes Camille Valabrègue. As we don’t want to be intimidated, we decided to file a complaint.” “I was shocked by the double reading, abonde Kateline Durand. I took it as aggression, a threat and intimidation. Their objective is to destabilize us, we are two women involved in politics and it is above all so that there is a democratic debate.”

“I am opening the debate on other solutions”

Once the hearing has taken place at the gendarmerie, it is up to the prosecutor to decide whether to pursue the filing of a complaint. What could have triggered such an act? “For my part, I have not taken any special positions on the subject, replies Camille Valabrègue. The demands I make are rather social. I was an employee of the Peasant Confederation and I was in contact with farmers quite a bit and I don’t have such a clear-cut position on the subject.”

For her part, Kateline Durand had the opportunity to speak on the subject as part of her departmental mandate. “I have taken a position on several occasions on the change in the status of the wolf, I believe that this is not the solution but I am opening the debate, explains the chosen one. I understand the anger and trauma that it causes to be attacked by a predator that we cannot see, but I open the debate to other solutions.”

Recent attacks

Recently, several attacks on herds have been recorded by farmers in South Aveyron. On the night of December 5 to 6, in La Fage, on the heights of the Saint-Paul-des-Fonts cirque, a sheep was found dead, two were injured. The latest dates back to Sunday December 15 at Gaec de La Doline, in the town of L’Hospitalet-du-Larzac, a sheep was killed.

“This is an attempt at intimidation”

Both are supported by La insoumise, whose local committee wrote a press release. “In addition to the cowardice of the act and the binary side of the message, the fact of targeting women recognized for their local commitment to the living is scandalous. This is an attempt at intimidation, a threat against people who hold left-wing ideas and who defend biodiversity, points out the Millavine section of the party. Today the atmosphere is tense and the sometimes imagined or exaggerated divisions are transformed into aggression. This situation illustrates the extent to which some people seek to create a climate of insecurity and seek to create fear. Local rebels condemn these practices which damage democratic debate and are harmful to citizen engagement.”

Difficult, for both, to identify particular people behind these two acts. “But we really take it as a threat, insists Camille Valabrègue. We’ll wait a few more days to see what decision the prosecutor will make.” The latter may or may not result in the opening of an investigation.
