more French people try their luck

A day of misfortune for some, of good fortune for others, Friday the 13th sees a threefold increase in the number of French people who decide to try their luck at winning the jackpot.

According to figures from Française des Jeux (FDJ), on that day, three times more players buy a scratch card. The choice is five numbers to tick out of 49, doubled with a lucky number, for a stake of three euros. According to a survey conducted by the FDJ, 80% of those questioned say they play a draw game on a Friday the 13th.

While some people suffer from paraskevidekatriaphobia (the fear of Friday the 13th, editor’s note), others, on the contrary, take this symbolic date as a lucky day.

“The Super Loto on Friday the 13th has become an unmissable event for the French, who have been mobilizing for these events for many years and some of whom only play for these draws” reports the FDJ.

Even the least playful are getting involved

For Françoise, a retiree and resident of Grenoble, if there is one day to buy a ticket it is Friday the 13th: “I’m not a big gambler and I’m not superstitious either, it brings bad luck! However, if I had to choose just one day in the year, it’s today,” she tells the Figaro.

Guest on France Info this Friday, Rémi Lataste, general director of the National Gaming Authority (ANJ), believes that the euphoria linked to the Olympic and Paralympic Games could encourage the French even more to buy a ticket. Another motivation: the winner will win more money than in a classic lottery. Indeed, on Friday the 13th the jackpot amounts to… 13 million euros. And 50 Loto codes drawn at random, with 20,000 euros for each code.
