The Washington Post conducted an in-depth investigation into the death of Aysenur Eygi, a Turkish-American activist killed by Israeli gunfire during a protest in the West Bank. Disturbing new evidence contradicts the IDF’s explanation.

On September 6, Aysenur Eygi, a 26-year-old American activist of Turkish origin, took part in her first demonstration in the West Bank, in the village of Beita, near Nablus. Nervous, she told her comrades that she hoped “protect the Palestinians” in the face of increasing violence in the Israeli-occupied territories. That day, she was killed by Israeli gunfire, and the details surrounding her death remain unclear and disputed.

“We both decided to stay away from any action,” said Helen, an Australian volunteer in her 60s who accompanied Eygi throughout the day. Yet Eygi’s caution did not protect her. She was fatally shot in the head after brief clashes following Friday prayers. On Tuesday, September 10, the Israeli military said it was “very likely” that she was reached “by accident” by one of his soldiers, specifying that the incident had occurred “during a violent riot” and that the shot was aimed “the main instigator.”
