Monaco is making progress in reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions: a step towards carbon neutrality by 2050 / News / The Environment / Government Action / Government Portal

The Environment Department has just published with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) the National Inventory Report 2024 of GHG emissions (data from 2022)which highlights significant progress in reducing Monaco’s GHG emissions.

In 2022, total GHG emissions amounted to 66.53 kt CO₂eqmarking a remarkable drop in 34,5 % compared to the base year of 1990. This reduction is attributable to several factors, including a reduction in fuel consumption in the transport and construction sectors, as well as an increase in the use of biofuels. The building, mobility and waste treatment sectors remain the main GHG emitting sectors.

Notable progress has been made in energy management. 65.5% of the energy consumed in Monaco was of renewable origin in 2022. This proportion is constantly increasing. The Principality places particular emphasis on renewable electricity, with 43 % of its consumption from sources such as hydroelectricity.

The policies and measures implemented by the Government as part of its Climate Air Energy Plan aim to achieve the objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by -55% in 2030 compared to 1990.

These positive results are accompanied by a proactive policy of adapting our territory to climate change. The action program implemented aims to develop nature-based solutions, and more particularly urban renaturation, in order to strengthen climate resilience.

The Environment Department has initiated the development of the Principality’s Low Carbon Strategy which should help chart the path to carbon neutrality by 2050, while taking into account the current challenges posed by climate change.
