“We want to make the road on the banks a little more -like”: the Agglomeration of takes charge of the RN21

the essential
Tuesday morning, the services of the State and the Agglomeration of signed a protocol for the exchange of state ownership concerning the Camélat bar and the road on the banks. An uncertain future hangs over access to the road on the banks by cars.

It is now confirmed, the Camélat bar returns to the State while the Agglomeration of Agen recovers the RN21, in other words the road on the banks. On Tuesday, Jean Dionis, mayor of Agen and president of the Agglomeration, and Daniel Barnier, prefect of Lot-et-Garonne, signed a protocol for the exchange of state property.

“Thinking about the development of 2030”

Clearly, the western ring road and Camélat return to the State, which transfers the RN21, the RN113, the Saint-Jacques roundabout, the Passeligne roundabout and that of Riols to the Agglo.

For Daniel Barnier, this exchange “is part of the process of reducing the RN21. This involves bringing Agen even closer to Villeneuve, to allow faster access. » Jean Dionis considers it “natural for the State to regain control of the major national routes. Agen being the capital of the middle Garonne, the State finds its natural domain. » This for the Camélat bar.

On the other hand, should we expect drastic measures from the Agglo regarding the road on the banks? “Allow me a whiff of megalomania,” smiles Jean Dionis. “I was told that the State is doing a good deal, since it is recovering a brand new structure, and that the Agglomeration is recovering old ones. The road on the banks provided many services for almost thirty years. But now we have to start thinking about the planning of 2030, and not that of 1995.”

The mayor declares that he wants to maintain the protective function of the road, and believes that at the time of its construction, the road on the banks was “experienced painfully by the people of Agenais, as a break with their river. » This was the case of Michel Serres, who never loved her. From there to imagine that the car will one day be permanently banned? “We still have time to prepare scenarios,” says Jean Dionis. “We would like to make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to access, that’s for sure. First of all, I refer to a promise that I made to Michel Serres during his funeral, in 2019: we want to make this road and its surroundings a little more Agenesque. »
