Why it matters. Fuel prices on the rise… before a new surge?

Bad news for motorists, just before the All Saints’ Day holidays. After falling prices in recent weeks, fuel prices have been rising again for several days in .

More than three cents for diesel

According to data from the Ministry of Ecological Transition, the liter of diesel exceeded the mark of 1.60 euros per liter the week of October 7, an increase of 3.3 cents. The price of gasoline (SP95 – E10) rose to 1.70 euros per liter, an increase of 2.2 cents in one week.

“10-15 euros more for full”

And motorists have noticed this. “It has increased over the past two weeks. On a full tank it makes me 10-15 euros more,” explained a consumer on Tuesday at the microphone of our colleagues at RMC, in a petrol station in Bègles, in .

Increases which could be accentuated due to the tensions reigning in the Middle East. Thus, on October 2, oil prices jumped by 6%, due in particular to Iran’s attack on Israel which had taken place the day before.

The price of a barrel on the rise

Oil prices remained low on Wednesday as the market was concerned about weak global demand, while ruling out the risk of a major escalation in the conflict between Israel and Iran. In the morning, the price of a barrel hovered around 75 dollars, approaching the symbolic mark of 80 dollars.

New regulations to come

And France could soon face a new surge in the value of fuels, according to a report from the Court of Auditors, which recalls that the EU wants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels via the creation of a new carbon marketcalled ETS 2, which is part of the “Fit for 55” plan. ETS 2 will directly concern several sectors, includingroad transport, and will make no distinction between households and businesses, with entry into force planned for 2027.

The new regulations could lead to a jump of around 10 to 11% on fuels and 11 to 13% on gas, according to the Court of Auditors, or between 200 and 650 euros more each year on the energy bill of French homes.
