Javier Milei’s Argentina wants to become a paradise for foreign investors

DECRYPTION – Before becoming a popular place for international capital, Buenos Aires will first have to convince the Argentines themselves to reinject into the national economy their savings and fortunes, placed abroad or under the mattress.

On this rainy Tuesday at the end of the southern winter, morale is high in the lobby of the Museum of Latin American Art in Buenos Aires (MALBA), on the very chic Libertador Avenue, in the northern part of the Argentine capital. This is where the first congress of RepensAR, a think-tank in full gestation, is taking place, driven by the investment funds Americas Capital Investment and Bunker.

The objective: to take stock of the country and its ability to attract foreign investors. Until recently, Argentina was in a situation of almost total isolation in terms of finances, trade and production. Since coming to power, the ultra-liberal Javier Milei has put the accounts in order, allowed for relative stability of the peso (the national currency) and helped to reduce country risk, this indicator that measures the risk that a State will not recover its debt to its creditors.
