Emmaüs “considers” compensation for victims

Published on Friday, a report states 17 new accusations of sexual violence against Abbé Pierre, some of which concern for the first time facts that could be similar to rape or concerning minors.

Emmaüs International “think” to a form of compensation for the victims of Abbé Pierre, its general director indicated on Monday after the new wave of accusations of sexual violence targeting the priest who died in 2007. “This is a very important issue that we are working on, that we are thinking about at the moment.”said Adrien Chaboche, when asked about the issue of compensation on RTL. “It’s a process that takes a little bit of time.” more “we are working on it”.

Following this report, commissioned by the Abbé Pierre Foundation, Emmaüs France and Emmaüs International, the three organizations reaffirmed their “full support” to the victims and announced a series of measures.

The Abbé Pierre Foundation has indicated that it has initiated steps to change its name and Emmaüs has announced the definitive closure of a memorial centre dedicated to Abbé Pierre in Esteville (Seine-Maritime). “From now on, Abbé Pierre, for everyone and particularly for people who have been victims of violence in their lives, is the image of a sexual predator.”stressed Adrien Chaboche. “Everything suggests” moreover that in view “We still don’t know everything about the events that took place over such a long period of time.”he added. “There are certainly other facts, we expect to see other testimonies. The listening line remains open for the moment until the end of the year at least.”.

Faced with the new revelations, the president of the Conference of Religious Men and Women of France (Corref), Véronique Margron, pleaded on Saturday for the establishment of“a process of justice, recognition, reparation”similar to what was done after the report of the Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Church” (Ciase).
