Beaten by the Italian in his first Grand Slam final, the American acknowledged his opponent’s current superiority.
Taylor Fritz is not a bad sport. “He is the best player in the world at the moment”admitted the American, beaten in the final of the US Open tennis tournament by the Italian world number 1 Jannik Sinner on Sunday in New York. “It was a difficult match. I had a plan, I did some things well but I did many others badly, for example I didn’t hit the ball as well as I had hoped.”lamented the 26-year-old American, who was playing in his first Grand Slam final, after a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 defeat.
“I improved my serve in the second set, after struggling in the first set. In the third set I managed to combine all the elements, with a better forehand. I put myself in a position to win this set but he played very well when I served for the set. He is the best player in the world at the moment.”

“He (Sinner) has improved a lot since I beat him in two sets in Indian Wells in 2021,” the American said. “Mainly, and by far, on his serve.” Fritz, who had never made it past the quarter-finals of a Major, was pleased with his performance, especially “that at no time during the two weeks did I feel like I was playing incredible tennis”he said. “I played solidly, but nothing outrageous. My backhand could have been better, my serve too. It’s very reassuring to have had such a run by simply being solid.”concluded the Californian, his eyes already fixed on the sequel.
