The two students had a dispute several years ago that the school’s principal said had been resolved. Sweden has been facing a rise in violence for several years.

A teenager shot and injured another student at his school in Stockholm on Wednesday, September 4, for reasons that are still unknown, authorities announced. The teenager who was injured at the Trangsundsskolan school in the south of the capital was “conscious and able to speak” when police arrived, the school said on its website. The two students had a dispute several years ago that had been resolved, the school’s principal, Kaj Majuri, told reporters.

The incident occurred in a “confined space”according to the police, the “first information” indicating that there were no other people around. According to the daily The evening paperthe shooting took place in the toilets. Some 700 students study at the school, which caters for young people aged seven to 15. The shocked students were asked to stay in their classes until the situation returned to normal, Swedish media reported.

The two youths involved in the conflict are students in grades five to nine, which means they are between 13 and 15 years old, the principal said. There was no indication of the suspect’s violent intentions, he said.

Sweden has been facing a rise in gang violence for several years, with gun battles and the use of improvised explosive devices, sometimes involving young people. But Majuri said he was not aware of any links to gang violence. “Today there was a conflict between two students which escalated seriously.”he simply said during a press conference.
