The far-right party achieved two record scores in two local elections in the east of the country, in Saxony and Thuringia.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz calls for coalitions on Monday, September 2 “without the extreme right” after the breakthrough of the Alternative for Germany (AFd) in regional elections in two states of the former GDR. “The AfD is harming Germany. It is weakening the economy, it is dividing society and it is ruining our country’s reputation,” said the social democratic leader in a message posted on Facebook, describing it as“bitter” the election results.

The far-right party actually achieved two record scores in two local elections in the east of the country, in Saxony and Thuringia, further weakening Olaf Scholz’s centre-left coalition, a year before the legislative elections. «[Ces]results are worrying (…)
All democratic parties are now called upon to form stable governments without the extreme right.”adds the Chancellor in his message.

AfD, the leading political force in Thuringia…

In Thuringia, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has become the leading political force, claiming 32.8% of the vote, according to provisional results. Its regional leader, Björn Höcke, one of the most radical figures in the party, says he is “ready for cooperation” but no other party wants to ally with him.

.. and second in Saxony

In Saxony, the AfD gained 7 points (30.6%) and came second behind the conservatives of the CDU (31.9%), who also ruled out any alliance with the extreme right but will have difficulty finding a majority in the regional parliament of Dresden.
