As fighting continues in eastern Ukraine, kyiv’s army continues its advances and attacks, now directed towards Russian territory.

Russian air defenses shot down 158 Ukrainian drones over 15 Russian regions overnight, including two over Moscow, the Defense Ministry said on Sunday, September 1.

The ministry reported on Telegram that the largest number of drones, 122, were shot down over the Kursk, Bryansk, Voronezh and Belgorod regions, which border Ukraine.

“Our defense thwarted an attempt at a massive drone attack over the territory of the Bryansk region,” local governor Alexander Bogomaz reported overnight.

Aircraft heading for Moscow

In the south of the Moscow region, a night attack using three drones targeted the Kachira coal-fired power plant, district head Mikhail Shuvalov said.

“There were no casualties or damage” and the attack did not cause “any fires”, the local official assured on Telegram, adding that “electricity is correctly delivered to subscribers”.

A total of five aircraft flying towards the capital were neutralized by Russian forces, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, more than a week after what the elected official described as “one of the largest” drone attacks in Moscow’s history – the defense had destroyed 11 drones, according to the authorities.

Several attacks on Russian territory in recent days

Russian defense also shot down missiles in the regions of Belgorod and Voronezh, which border Ukraine, as well as in Lipetsk, Ryazan and Orel, according to their governors.

“The glazing of three residential buildings in Belgorod was damaged. Within a private residence, a utility building was completely destroyed,” said Vyacheslav Gladkov, head of the Belgorod region.

The state news agency Tass also reported the destruction of aircraft in the Tver and Tula regions.

On Wednesday, two fuel depots caught fire in the Russian regions of Rostov and Kirov following attacks by Ukrainian drones.
