The investigation is progressing, five months after the fire which ravaged part of the Saint-Pierre-des-Corps swimming pool, in Indre-et-Loire. On the night of July 29 to 30, 2024, an arson fire damaged the changing rooms, the hall and the structure of the swimming pool, which has since been closed to the public.
According to information from our colleagues in the New Republic, confirmed by France 3 with the Tours public prosecutor, a man was in fact arrested this Sunday, December 22 in Tours. Aged 30, he is suspected of having participated in this arson. He was brought to court this Monday, December 23. Several people could be involved, but at present this is the only arrest in this case.
From the first hours of the investigation, a broken door and traces of blood left little doubt about the criminal origin of the disaster. The fire started in the reception area before spreading to the rest of the building.
The damage noted was considerable, the interiors and roof having been devastated by the flames. After a first visit by the experts, “the cost of the rehabilitation amounts to one million euros”Olivier Conte, the mayor of Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, told France 3.
An assessment and a complete estimate of the damage are expected by January 2025. The time will then come to decide whether to rehabilitate this building dating from 1972, or to raze it to rebuild, on site or elsewhere, a new swimming pool.
