The Philadelphia Eagles thought about signing an 11th victory in a row and thus winning the East of the National, but the Washington Commanders decided otherwise. Despite five turnovers, Washington was able to score a game-winning touchdown with less than 10 seconds left to defeat Philadelphia 36-33.
The Commanders ended the Eagles' 10-game winning streak.
Despite two interceptions, Jayden Daniels had an excellent performance, throwing five touchdown passes and 258 yards through the air. He also rushed 9 times for 81 yards.
For its part, Philly will now have to look to the future despite the injury of their quarterback Jalen Hurts who had to leave the game in the first quarter due to a concussion.
Coming in relief for the rest of the game, former Pittsburgh Steelers Kenny Pickett scored a touchdown pass on the same offensive sequence. He completed 14 of his 24 passes and was intercepted once.
For his part, running back Saquon Barkley particularly stood out in the defeat, scoring two touchdowns on the ground, including one over a distance of 68 yards. He amassed 150 yards on 29 carries.
“We didn't do everything we needed to do,” Barkley said. We screwed up several games and I included myself in all that.”
“They are very strong and very balanced. They were coming here with a lot of momentum, Daniels recalled. You want to have the chance to face this kind of team. I still believe we can win. Nothing is set until the dial reads zero. This kind of moment and outcome nourishes me.”
The Commanders begin a season with a record of 10-5 or better for the first time since 1991 when they won the Super Bowl.
An intense end to the match
The Eagles appeared to be headed for an easy victory with a 13-point lead at the end of the third quarter. That’s when things got complicated for Philly.
Less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, Olamide Zaccheaus caught Daniels' short pass for his first touchdown of the game and cut the lead to less than one possession.
Zaccheaus did not stop there. Despite a penalty awarded to the Eagles for too many players on the field on defense, the Commanders receiver made a 49-yard play to tie the game. Zane Gonzalez's successful conversion then gave Washington the lead.
Then, after an Eagles field goal, Washington got one last chance to win. Posted at the 9 line with 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter and with no timeout in hand, Daniels put the ball on the ground to stop the clock.
Then, on second down, on the most important play of the game, Daniel joined his receiver Jamison Crowder in the end zone to give his team a short lead. However, the successful two-point conversion moments later was enough to give the Commanders the win.
