In a little over a month, a major sporting event will energize the daily lives of residents of the Paris region and other cities in France.
As big sports fans, this is obviously one of the topics that is currently driving our discussions in the EURODECISION offices. And as we like to look for applications of our profession in our daily lives, we have come to wonder what is the maximum number of events that a person could attend, if they had an unlimited budget (and availability).
The data
From the event calendar (v8, dated 03/06/24), we created a dataset bringing together the 45 sporting disciplines, the 758 sessions and the sites where the competitions take place. As the tests will take place in different cities in France, we have calculated the travel time between each site.
Optimize the test schedule
We then entered all this data into our task scheduling optimization module LP-Scheduler. The objective is to maximize the number of events that the same person can attend among the 758 that will be held during the 18 days of the competition. In less than a second of calculation, LP-Scheduler offers a solution to 64 tests, or on average 3.5 tests per day.
