It is well known that on Boxing Day, sixteen teams will play in the Premier League on Boxing Day (and four on December 27). A true tradition in England, this event has taken place every year since December 26, 1971. In order to better digest the dishes eaten at Christmas, our British neighbors have declared a second public holiday. This therefore allows the English to benefit from the championship posters.
Why do we talk about “Boxing Day”?
There are several versions regarding the origin of Boxing Day. If we refer to that dating back to 1830, we consider that this day was special for the English because it was the day of rest for domestic staff and workers. To thank them for their work, their employers gave them boxes. These contained Christmas leftovers, money and gifts. The servants were thus able to share a moment with their family during this public holiday. For others, Boxing Day is actually a tradition dating back to the 15th century.
