It's difficult to miss this major construction site from avenue des Arènes in Balmanortheast of Toulouse.
In the middle of the town's sports centre, along the Toulouse ring road, the ballet of cranes gives shape to a new building of around 12 meters high which will house both a multipurpose room, a dojo and an archery room.
Jobs that are hard to ignore
The work is sure to catch the eye. At the end of December, the new sports and cultural facilities are already taking shape with their impressive formworks. “They are, in a way, molds into which concrete is poured,” explains Vincent Terrail-Novèsmayor of Balma, contacted by Toulouse News.
With the elevation of the facades in progress, residents can already see that the building will not have the same scale as the old dojo and the previous multipurpose room which were installed in this same location, in the middle of the grounds. rugby and athletics. Both sites were demolished last July in order to make way for this new construction site.
Two buildings from the 60s replaced
This new multipurpose room will be 200 m² more than the old one. In addition to offering more space, it will be more comfortable for associations. “It was a building from the 60s, very poorly insulated, with very outdated heating,” recalls the mayor.
The Balmanese also remember the old dojo which was more visible from the road. Also built in the 1960s, “it was a sheet metal building of around 200 m²”.
Multipurpose room, dojo and archery
From the end of 2025, residents will be able to find the new 2,800 m² complex which will bring together these two pieces of equipment. “To be in line with the population growth objectives, we designed a multipurpose room with 1000 m² of useful space. We will also have a 200 m² lodge area,” explains the elected official.
Upstairs, the dojo will be a little over 420 m². There will also be a 348 m² archery room, as well as changing rooms at the back for the stadium.
In the meantime, the archers of the Balma Arc Club will continue to train in the Jean-Rostand college gymnasium. Ultimately, after this new installation, “slots may become available for other sports associations”.
As for the Toulouse-Balma Martial Arts association, which has no longer been able to benefit from its dojo since the summer, it has been forced to relocate its training.
Delivery for October 2025
Being organized on two levels, this future complex will provide more space for greening the surrounding areas and creating pathways. Especially since the area is also known to walkers for its hiking trails along the banks of L'Hers.
The opening of this new sports complex is expected for October 2025. A project which amounts to approximately eight million euros (structure and equipment included).
An “innovative procedure” initiated
For this project, Balma town hall awarded a global performance contract. An “innovative procedure”, according to Vincent Terrail-Novès, mayor of Balma, already used to create the new Vidailhan neighborhood house. Here, “we choose a group of companies and architects who will commit, from the start, to the energy performances that we set,” explains the elected official.
Bringing together a structural work company and various design offices, this group “proposes developments and equipment according to these energy objectives”.
If these are not achieved, the City receives compensation which can amount to “hundreds of thousands of euros”, underlines the elected official.
