“The whole area around the Old Market” of Magdeburg (Germany) remains closed off on Saturday, December 21 in the morning, after a deadly attack on the Christmas market which left at least two dead and 60 injured on Friday evening, announced the town hall of this town in the east of the country. The town hall asks residents to avoid the area “as much as possible”, and local police launched an appeal on social media, looking for “witnesses, photos and videos” of the attack. At least two people died and more than 60 others were injured in this car-ramming attack, announced the head of the regional government of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff, mid-evening on Friday. According to the latest, still provisional, report, a child is among the victims and around fifteen seriously injured.

Suspect arrested. “We have arrested the author” of the attack and “this is a man from Saudi Arabia who works as a doctor” in the Saxony-Anhalt region, also explained the head of the regional government, Reiner Haselof. The latter specified that he had “acted alone”.

Olaf Scholz in Magdeburg. The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, addressed his “thoughts” to the attention of “victims and their families”. He goes there Saturday morning accompanied by the Minister of the Interior, to find out more and provide support to the local population.

A tribute organized Saturday evening. “An hour of tribute” will be organized on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. in Magdeburg Cathedral, announced the city's mayor Simone Borris. “As mayor of Magdeburg, I can only tell you how upset and deeply touched I am”reacted the city councilor. “My heart goes out to the victims and their families.”
