the essential
On Wednesday, December 18, a fire destroyed the Intermarché in Cormicy (Marne), mobilizing 42 firefighters and leaving employees jobless, a few days before the end-of-year holidays.
A few days before Christmas, the director and employees are distraught. On Wednesday December 18, a fire ravaged the Intermarché in Cormicy, in Marne, completely destroying the 2,000 m² building, reports France 3 Régions.
The fire, probably caused by an electrical panel or a wood oven, caused no injuries among the 9 employees present, who were quickly evacuated. 42 firefighters from several municipalities were mobilized to control the fire, which was contained at 10:20 a.m.
The building, declared in danger, will have to be razed and rebuilt. The 16 employees, in shock, lost their work tools, while the store’s stock, planned for the holidays, was completely destroyed. Steps have been taken to cover insurance and salaries.
The only supermarket in the area
The mayor of Cormicy, Chantal Lantenois, made the town hall available for the victims and mentioned the bus lines to Reims to compensate for the absence of local commerce, the Intermarché being the only supermarket in the area.
Another fire also broke out in Aÿ-Champagne the same day, requiring additional resources, including a fire hose from Aisne.
