“The face of courage”: this is the title of an article which accompanies this Thursday morning this photo published on the home page of the site of the New York Times concerning the Frenchwoman Gisèle Pelicot. “The rape trial in France is over. The verdicts have been delivered. And the image of Gisèle Pelicot has become a symbol of feminine strength throughout the world,” writes the Times in highlight of the article signed by Vanessa Friedman.
The French newspaper The Worldhe summarizes these verdicts as follows: “After three and a half months of hearing, the Vaucluse criminal court pronounced its verdict on Thursday. By its scale of sentences, the court wanted to mark a very clear difference between the ex-husband of Gisèle Pelicot – sentenced to 20 years in prison [la peine maximale] – and his 50 co-defendants – from 3 years to 15 years in prison –, contrary to the indictment. » The prosecution had requested a total of 652 years in prison for 51 defendants, who were ultimately sentenced to 428 years behind bars.
