CHRONIC – The suspension of the director of the Immaculate Conception (Pau) “for undermining secularism” must be worrying. With this decision, the State is overstepping its role and obeying ideologies that seek to establish a new society without a past.

We remember, just a few months ago, the campaign led against the Stanislas college by the left-wing press. Behind a poorly supported, not to say misleading, dossier, it was mainly about reproaching this Catholic educational institution for being Catholic, and even more, for evading the indoctrination mechanisms often prescribed by the National Education. A similar sequence has just opened in Pau, with the charge led against Christian Espeso, head of the Immaculate Conception establishment, suspended from his duties for a period of three years – while nevertheless retaining the right to teach. He is accused of attacks on secularism, which once again amounts to being indignant that a Catholic school is not completely foreign to the religion it professes, while doing so within the parameters prescribed by law.

What is at stake here goes far beyond what one might call shaky tolerance…
