Slovenian Primoz Roglic, 34, won the Vuelta a España on Sunday after the 21st and final stage, a 24.6-kilometre time trial through the streets of Madrid that went to Swiss Stefan Küng.

The leader of the Red Bull-Bora team, already victorious on the roads of Spain in 2019, 2020 and 2021, equals the record for the number of victories in the Vuelta set by the Spaniard Roberto Heras in the early 2000s (2000, 2003, 2004, 2005). After 21 stages and nearly 60,000 meters of elevation gain, Roglic is 2 minutes 36 seconds ahead of the Australian Ben O’Connor in the final general classification, who wore the red leader’s jersey for thirteen days.

Spaniard Enric Mas kept his third place on the podium, ahead of Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz, 4th. Frenchman David Gaudu, whose time trial is not his favourite exercise, lost his fifth place, overtaken by Dane Mattias Skjelmose, white jersey of the best young rider of the event.

Australian Kaden Groves left Madrid with the green jersey in the points classification, while his compatriot Jay Vine finished top of the best climber classification.

On Sunday, 30-year-old Stefan Küng claimed his first stage victory in a Grand Tour. The rider from the Groupama-FDJ team beat Roglic by 31 seconds.
