She wanted to make this trial public, so that “the shame changes sides” and other women no longer suffer the horrors that were inflicted on her. The so-called Mazan rape case, tried today before the Vaucluse departmental criminal court, is attracting all eyes in France and internationally. Because it is beyond anything one could imagine: it is the trial of a man, Dominique Pélicot, but also of fifty other “Mr. Everyman”, accused of having abused Gisèle Pélicot. For nearly ten years, between 2011 and 2020, the septuagenarian drugged his wife to deliver her to strangers he met on the Internet, who came to rape her in her lethargic sleep. A terrible ordeal that is now making headlines in all the media, so much do Gisèle Pélicot’s courage and resilience command admiration. But she is not the only victim in this case.

On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, while Dominique Pélicot was still exempt from the hearing for health reasons, his testimony could not be heard. The court therefore decided to call Cilia M., the wife of one of the fifty other defendants, to the stand. Her husband is the only one who did not rape Gisèle Pélicot, but he did, however, subject her to the same fate. Between 2015 and 2020, Jean-Pierre M. drugged his own wife under the influence of Dominique Pélicot, with pills that the latter gave him.
