Another traffic accident. On Tuesday, September 3, 2024, a group of 21 children aged 3 to 6 and their chaperones left the Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp nursery school (Doubs) around noon to go to the canteen. It was at this point that they were hit by a drunken septuagenarian driving a car on the sidewalk, according to the gendarmerie. In the accident, a 5-year-old girl was seriously injured and had to be rushed to the Minjoz University Hospital in Besançon by the SMUR. A boy of the same age and one of the 58-year-old chaperones were also injured and were taken to the same hospital. However, at the end of the afternoon, the Besançon prosecutor gave reassuring news and the suspicion of head trauma in the girl was ruled out. For his part, the 70-year-old man was taken into custody for “unintentional injuries by a driver of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol”, as explained by the public prosecutor of Besançon, Étienne Manteaux, to AFP.
According to the Besançon prosecutor’s office, the septuagenarian at the wheel, unknown to the police, was visibly very drunk at the time of the incident and had not been able to be detected by the police forces. According to the gendarmerie of the Valdahon brigade community and the Pontarlier motorized brigade, he “lost control of his vehicle”.
