Behind him, the statistics of wolf attacks on rent animals increased until 2022 and then dropped, drawing a kind of mountain. For this reason, Valais State Councilor Frédéric Favre describes himself “satisfied”. According to the liberal-radical, “we managed to break a curve which was exponential”. Between September and January, 34 wolves were slaughtered in Valais. The hunting service had requested the complete regulation of 5 packs identified on its territory and which were responsible for at least one attack each on animals which benefited from protection. None have been completely eradicated. For the Minister of Security, “we are not exterminating a species, we seek to lower the pressure so that everyone can cohabit”.
In 2024, 341 rent animals were killed by wolves in Valais, during 112 attacks, especially concentrated on the left bank of the Rhône. By way of comparison, it was 415 in 2022, 302 in 2020 and 269 in 2018. Last winter, proactive regulations had not started until December, and 27 wolves had been slaughtered in the canton. Eleven of them did not belong to targeted packs. These figures annoy the head of the service, Nicolas Bourquin. The biologist recalls that the Federal Environment Office issues perimeters for perimeters, and that all the wolves there can be shot. Frédéric Favre sums up: “When they are in the shooting area, there are no good or bad wolves.”
