The Geneva International School hits the screw on the use of the phone within its walls, like other private schools before it. No more laptop in class, but also in recess, at the cafeteria and in the masters room, because the rule also concerns teachers. In the profession, the ban divides.

The ban, which comes into force this week, concerns the 4,500 students from the International School of Geneva. Drastic, she skeptical the president of the union of French -speaking teachers David Rey.

The school must live with its time, he judged Tuesday at the microphone of the RTS morning. If he recognizes that social networks can expose students to violent images or cause harassment, including in the courtyard, it is better to supervise these digital habits rather than prohibiting them.

“We tend to want to do prevention, to prepare them for the use of social networks, to be able to identify if an image or information is real,” explains David Rey. “And we can never control everything. The full ban will not allow you to be assured that the students will not use mobile phones well as soon as they have the opportunity,” he points out.

Also a teaching tool

As for teachers, some use their phone in class as a teaching tool. David Rey therefore advocates common sense.

In Switzerland, there is no general ban on smartphones in schools, unlike France or Italy. Most establishments are already prohibited from getting your phone out during the school schedule, but it can be tolerated during breaks.
