Senegal among the ten countries selected for the sustainable aviation fuel test

Senegal was chosen from ten member states of the International Civil Aviation Organization (OCAI) to carry out a feasibility study on the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in 2026. The announcement was made of this Monday by the National Agency for Civil Aviation and Meteorology (Anacim).

As part of the preparation of the next steps for the production of these fuels in accordance with the compensation and reduction of carbon emissions for international aviation (Corsia), a regional awareness workshop is held on February 3 and 4 within From the General Directorate of Anacim, Focal Corsia point in Senegal.

The event will bring together various stakeholders, including representatives of the ministries of infrastructure, land and air transport, environment and ecological transition, as well as oil and mines. Actors from the aeronautical sector, including national airlines, airport managers such as Limak-Aibd-Summa (LAS) and AIBD SA, as well as the Aviation fuel handling (SMCADY) and the Handling 2AS company, go Also take part in discussions, face -to -face and online.

In addition, a Togolese delegation made up of representatives of the Togo Civil Aviation National Aviation Agency, the Hydrocarbons Directorate and the Country Ministry of the Country will participate in the work.

Anacim director general, Dr Diaga Basse, recalled that in 2019, civil aviation represented approximately 2 % of global CO2 emissions. With the expected increase in air traffic, this percentage could increase. SAFs present a viable solution because they can reduce up to 80 % of CO2 emissions on their entire life cycle, subject to respecting sustainability criteria, unlike traditional fossil fuels.

This workshop is part of the capacity building program for the attenuation of CO2 emissions from international aviation in Africa and the Caribbean. Funded by the European Union, this program is implemented by the Agence of the European Union for Aviation Safety (EASA).

With this initiative, Senegal affirms its desire to participate actively in the energy transition from the aeronautical sector and to reduce its carbon footprint while strengthening its industrial capacities in the production of sustainable fuels.
