A trip for a good cause turns into a tragedy in Morocco

David Barden will not have completed his world tour by bike. He will finish his race in Morocco. While scheduled to stay at the La Belle Vue hotel, located at the top of the mountain, in the remote Tizi N’test region on September 8, the British cyclist felt too tired to cycle up the mountain. He then decided to spend the night at Café Sunset, 8 km from the establishment. The earthquake occurs and the café’s veranda collapses on David.

His daughter Sarah tries to find him. She contacted Hamza Boumazough, owner of the La Belle Vue hotel, to whom her father had told that he was going to stay at the café the night of September 8. Boumazough and other residents go looking for him. They found David’s body in the rubble of the earthquake the next morning. “I am devastated by Hamza’s action, which was a real lifeline for me in finding my father,” Sarah told the channel Al Jazeera. The earthquake left 456 dead in the Tizi N’test region alone.

David Barden planned to cycle through 20 countries. The last post on his blog is from September 7: “So far, during this trip through more than 20 countries, I have enjoyed setting myself demanding challenges and getting away from normal routines where the unfolding of the day can be anticipated with few surprises. […] The long, serendipitous conversations about people’s life experiences, completely different from my own, are always an enriching part of travel.”
