A mountaineer in his twenties, of Finnish origin, died on Friday August 25 after being hit during a rock fall in the Mont-Blanc massif.

The tragedy occurred around 1:30 p.m. this Friday, just after crossing the Goûter corridor. The victim was undertaking the ascent to the refuge in the company of his father. It was he who alerted the emergency services.

The PGHM intervened on board the Dragon 74 helicopter. The body of the young man was transported to the DZ des . The father was taken care of unharmed but in a state of shock.

The Goûter corridor is a place known in the normal route of Mont Blanc for its frequent rockfalls. At the beginning of the week, an impressive landslide had already been filmed in this corridor by mountaineers.

For several days, the Mont-Blanc massif has been plagued by multiple landslides under the effect of high temperatures and the thawing of the permafrost. This Wednesday, August 23, a rock fall of nearly 20,000 cubic meters, for example, took place on the north face of the Aiguille du Midi.

At the start of the week, the prefecture of Haute-Savoie had invited mountaineers to “postpone their ascent” because of the risk of major rockfalls caused by the high temperatures.
