Samsung Canada is offering free locking devices and button lids as an added safety measure for select slide-in electric ranges

Samsung Electronics Canada Inc. today announced, in collaboration with Health Canada, that it will provide free door locks or knob covers to owners of certain slide-in electric ranges with front-mounted knobs, as part of a voluntary recall. The affected models were sold in Canada from 2013 to 2024. This announcement follows reports that front-mounted range knobs can be activated by accidental contact with people or pets, posing a fire hazard if flammable items are left on the range top. Samsung Canada is offering customers of slide-in electric ranges a free set of door locks or covers, depending on the model, to help prevent accidental activation.

To receive a free set of locks or knob caps, depending on their model, customers can go to www.samsung.com/ca_fr/support/slide-in-electric-range-knob-kit/or contact Samsung toll-free at 1-833-775-0120 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST or 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by live chat.

Samsung stove knobs meet industry safety standards set by UL Standards & Engagementincluding two-step activation requiring sequential “push and turn” movements, and consumers can continue to use their slide-in electric range while waiting for their free set of locking devices or knob covers. Consumers should always be aware of accidental activations and never leave anything on the surface of their range when not in use.

Safety Tips for Consumers

Samsung recommends that consumers follow these range safety precautions, regardless of range type or manufacturer:

  • When you are not cooking, never , leave or store anything on your stove top.
  • Keep children and pets away from stove knobs.
  • Be sure to check that your stove knobs are turned off after cooking.

Advancing industry standards

Samsung Canada is committed to providing high-quality, innovative and safe products that improve the lives of our customers. Introduced in April 2024, all new Samsung Slide-In Ranges feature the industry’s first integrated three-step precision knobs, requiring an additional “pinch” action before the “push and turn” to ensure the knobs are only activated intentionally.

This latest advancement builds on Samsung’s existing security features, designed to alert consumers in the event of accidental activation:

  • Many Samsung ranges with Wi-Fi connectivity can be configured through the app Samsung SmartThings pour send mobile notifications instantly when a burner is activated.
  • The SmartThings app can be installed on mobile devices [Android, iOS] to connect smart home devices, including Samsung appliances.
  • Some Samsung range models feature illuminated knobs that display a distinctive blue LED light around the base of the knob when a burner is activated.

As Canada’s leading cooker brand[1]and concerned about consumer safety, we are participating in the ongoing discussions organized by the Joint Gas and Electric Range Knob Working Groupof the Consumer Product Safety Commission from the United States, which includes representatives from Health Canada, where major appliance brands are discussing how to review button safety standards for all stoves to address inadvertent activation.
