Prefecture rejects environmental authorization request

In a press release published this Wednesday, the prefect of Var announced that he was rejecting a project to install a landfill in Tanneron supported by Suez, citing “serious impacts on the environment”.

Years of investigation that ended in a clear refusal. For five years, Suez Mediterranée has been trying to obtain environmental authorization from the Var prefecture, in order to launch its project to install a “non-hazardous waste storage facility”.

But this Wednesday, September 3, in a press release, the prefecture declared that it did not wish to “give a favorable response to this request for environmental authorization.”

“Serious environmental impacts”

The prefecture assures that it has multiplied the discussions “to develop the project”, but it “does not meet the expectations of the State services and the communities concerned”. The press release announces that the mayors of Tanneron and the neighboring town of Callian are also opposed to the landfill.

“The project has significant shortcomings and serious impacts on the environment, both on biodiversity and on its integration into the landscape within the Tanneron and Colle du Rouet massifs,” assures the prefect.

The area in which the project was to be carried out is a “high risk area for forest fires”. According to the prefecture, Suez was unable to find convincing solutions for accessibility and fire protection.

The prefecture specifies that a “rejection order” was issued so that the procedure is considered “closed”.
