Multinational company relocates part of its production outside Belgian borders, several jobs threatened

LSpanish group GBFoods wants to focus on the production of “wet” foods, such as mayonnaise or other types of sauces, at its site in Puers-Saint-Amands. The production of dry foods would therefore be moved to other factories, the group – known for its Devos Lemmens, Liebig and Royco brands – announced on Thursday at an extraordinary works council meeting. This project puts 35 jobs at risk.

The aim is to make the Puers site “a centre of expertise” for sauces (including those of Devos Lemmens), management said. An analysis showed that this sector is doing well, while the production of dry foods, which are largely exported, “does not meet economic realities and is strategically less suited” to the Antwerp plant.

“This limits the growth potential of GBFoods in Puurs and weighs on the competitiveness of the plant,” adds the management. The latter therefore wishes to move the production of dry products to other sites in the group. These are mainly brands that are not sold in Belgium, with the exception of a small quantity of Royco products intended for vending machines.

This decision puts 35 jobs at risk. Management has begun the information and consultation phase provided for by the Renault law. “During this phase, discussions regarding possible alternatives will be held with staff representatives. If the project is confirmed, we (…) will collaborate on a social plan, associated with support measures,” she said.
