Man suspected of murder in Belgium arrested in France after stealing vegetables

UA 35-year-old man was arrested last Friday while stealing vegetables from a community garden in Décines-Charpieu, east of Lyon (south-east France), several local media outlets report. The individual is also wanted in Belgium for having robbed and killed a 90-year-old woman in Ghent a few years ago.

The vegetable garden had been regularly visited in recent weeks by a malicious person. The 35-year-old suspect was eventually caught red-handed by gardeners who had stood guard. The police apprehended the individual and it was later learned that the man was wanted by the Belgian justice system for the murder of Norris Georgette van den Bogaerde, aged 90. The victim had been found unconscious at home in Ghent on 27 June 2019. The house was in disarray and a gold bracelet had been stolen. The violent burglary is said to have taken place 48 hours earlier.

A European arrest warrant has been issued against the suspect, who has been illegally residing in France for two years. Currently incarcerated in Corbas prison, the thirty-year-old is due to appear before the French courts this Thursday for a hearing that could lead to his extradition to Belgium, according to French newspapers.
