The water infiltration that occurred on Friday in a storage facility of the Iconography Center of the Geneva Library (BGE) did not have any serious consequences. No destruction has been observed at this stage, the City of Geneva said on Wednesday.

The rapid activation of the crisis unit for the protection of cultural property proved effective, writes the City of Geneva. The teams mobilized, nearly 80 people, moved approximately 50 linear meters of documents, including photographic prints and negatives, among the 170 meters affected, in order to ensure their drying.

At the Iconography Center, several interventions made it possible to stop the water leak, coming from a neighboring building, and to move the documents out of the risk zone. A majority of the documents dried in 24 hours. Only 10% of the documents required additional drying using dehumidifiers.

However, photographic documents will need to be restored by specialists. An external conservation expert is currently examining the damaged images to assess the work that needs to be done. The whole will then be repackaged in order to be stored in a BGE repository.
