The big names in Mazametain Rugby

On the occasion of the release at the end of January of a work on Lucien Mias, “a legend of French Rugby” (Privat editions) in dedication at Calligram on February 8, we publish a series of articles on major rugby players from Mazamet .

Today, Aldo Quaglio (1932-2017), the left pillar of the XV of France which won the series of tests in South Africa for the first time against the Springboks in 1958 played at the Mazamet Club of 1957 to 1959. He discovered rugby at 15 in Saverdun. Capable of playing all positions, he will set himself at the pillar when he was playing in Lavelanet in 1954.

Lucien Mias called him in 1957 to sign at Mazamet. Finalist in 1958, Mazamet was beaten by the FC de Lourdes by Jean Prat. That same year, Aldo Qauglio began in the French team against Romania. Leader of the XV of France, Lucien Mias surrounds himself with a first shock line with the right pillar of Cahors Alfred Roques, the hooker of Montferrand Robert Vigier and prefers the faithful Quaglio to the media Domenech.

During two seasons and 13 selections, Aldo Quaglio participated in the historic tour in South Africa (he competes 8 of the 10 games) and won the 5 Nations tournament in 1959. He was elected “best pillar in the world in 1959”.

The following year, Mias stopped her international career, Quaglio spent XIII in Roanne and will have 17 selections in the French team including a World Cup. In 1966, he ranked crampons due to injuries without having received any sanction or warning. He returned to Lavelanet where he became coach and leader of the club before joining the Ariège Rugby Committee in XV.
