The inauguration will be followed by a commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp.
The 6,100 Jews from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region were deported by train, near the Lyon-Perrache station. In memory of these people deported to Drancy and to the death camps, the Shoah memorial will be inaugurated this Sunday at Place Carnot.
Symbolically, 1,173 meters of rails will make up the memorial, representing the 1,173 kilometers separating Lyon from the infamous city of Auschwitz, in Poland. The inauguration will take place at 10 a.m., and Fabrice Pannekoucke, the president of the Region, has confirmed his presence, alongside the mayor of Lyon Grégory Doucet.
-With its 65 tonnes of steel, this work represents a total investment of 600,000 euros, financed thanks to the participation of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, the City of Lyon, the Metropolis, the Department and numerous private donations.
Then, at 11 a.m., the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp will be held. Place Carnot, a tribute will be paid to the 6 million victims of the Shoah. An event reminding us of the importance of the duty to remember.
