Eowyn storm: thousands of private electricity households in Ireland

Hundreds of thousands of houses in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland were still without electricity in the night from Saturday to Sunday after the Eowyn storm, of exceptional power. A new storm is expected.

(Keystone-ATS) The storm, which the British weather service described on Saturday as “probably the strongest” on the United Kingdom for at least ten years, fell on the region on Friday. She killed a dead, immobilized planes on the ground and has closed schools.

Ireland recorded the strongest gusts of wind in its history during this episode. A new meteorological phenomenon is expected on both countries during the weekend, storm Herminia. The weather services have issued new alerts in snow, ice, wind and rain for Sundays and Monday days.

New disturbances expected

Continuing its efforts to repair the damage caused by storm Eowyn, the Irish company ESB Networks said it had restored the current in 366,000 households, farms and businesses on Saturday evening, but reports that 402,000 people are still without electricity.

In Northern Ireland, around 140,000 households were still deprived of electricity at the end of the afternoon, according to the supplier Nie Networks.

In Scotland, around 35,000 households were still without current on the night of Saturday to Sunday. Disturbances are still reported on roads and rail, air and ferries, according to the Scottish government.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer discussed with the leaders of Northern Ireland and Scotland of the support that London could give them.

Scottish Prime Minister John Swinney warned that it was necessary to “prepare for new disruptions” in view of next week’s weather forecasts.
