Friday January 24, a snake was found in an aisle of the Auchan hypermarket in Calais. Apprehended without difficulty, the animal was taken in by the Marais de Guînes educational park, reports La Voix du Nord.
A snake in the canned goods aisle. This is the astonishing discovery made on Friday January 24 by customers and employees of the Auchan hypermarket in Calais, reports The Voice of the North. The presence of the reptile, a 30 cm female belonging to the Elaphe Guttata species, also known as the “corn snake”, was reported in the morning, prompting the intervention of firefighters as well as the manager of the the Animal Store boutique, located in the same shopping center as the hypermarket, highlights regional daily life.
Jean-François Paindavoine, manager of the pet store, explained to Here North that the snake “was probably abandoned or escaped from home”. At first, some thought it came from his store. “I sometimes sell snakes of this species, but not this marbled brown color”he told La Voix du Nord, stressing that no similar animal was registered in his sales register.
Entrusted to a park
As a qualified professional, Jean-François Paindavoine was the first to take care of the reptile, whose hunger and thirst he quenched with the help of “a bowl and two prey”. To make matters worse, another snake of the same species was found not far from there a few days ago. “The workers found one while cutting down the trees just in front of Auchan. I had explained to the gentleman how to take care of it and feed it and he kept it. I was surprised that it was alive, because it was freezing that that day”he indicated to Nord Littoral.
-After being “put back on its feet”, the snake was entrusted to the Marais de Guînes educational park, which already welcomes one of its kind. “Visitors will be able to see it when we reopen in the spring, or not if it has been adopted”said Ludwig Zoonekynd, president of the park.
