A national unity threatened by the rise of ethnicist speeches

Senegal, long perceived as a model of stability and social cohesion, is today faced with a major challenge: the progression of ethnicist speeches. These words, which do not reflect any truth according to a Wolof proverb cited, instil the doubt and divide the national community. The alert is given in front of this threat which could weaken Senegalese unity.

In the past, the country has overcome significant political crises. The 1988 disorders, marked by post-electoral disputes, or even the assassination in 1993 of the vice-president of the Constitutional Council, tested the resilience of the Senegalese political system. Despite these tensions, the return to dialogue and transparency allowed Senegal to strengthen its democracy and maintain institutional stability.

From 2021 to 2023, Senegal faced new turbulence, exacerbated by demonstrations fueled by economic and political frustrations. However, faithful to its traditions of dialogue and negotiation, the country avoided climbing and preserved national unity. This spirit of peace, at the heart of Senegalese values, must be preserved in the face of the new challenges posed by divisive discourses.

These speeches, often motivated by political interests, play on fears and could compromise the common future of the Senegalese. “Senegal is an indivisible, secular, democratic and social republic”, recalls the Constitution, thus affirming the equality of all citizens. It is a solid basis for living together, but which requires vigilance and everyone’s commitment to last.

The emblematic figures of the country, whether political, religious or cultural, have always worked for a united and united nation. Cultural, ethnic and religious diversity, far from being weak, has constantly been a richness. This heritage, built by generations, should not be tarnished by speeches of hatred and division.

In March 2024, when the opposition took power without dispute, Senegal demonstrated its ability to unite for the common good. This internationally praised democratic success attests to the maturity and stability of its institutions. Thus, it is crucial to remain united to defend the achievements of this unique democratic experience.

The South Daily site, at the origin of these observations, underlines the imperative to reject any discourse likely to compromise national unity. The appeal launched is clear: preserving unity is a duty to future generations and a commitment to a serene future. Never negotiate our living together.
