Moroccan-Mauritanian Moroccan Agreement Protocol in the electricity and renewable energies

A memorandum of understanding between Morocco and Mauritania was signed on Thursday in Rabat, with a view to expanding bilateral partnership in the electricity and renewable energies and intensifying the exchange of expertise in security electric.

Signed by the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, and her Mauritanian counterpart, Mohamed Ould Khaled, this protocol focuses on the implementation of projects intended to electrify rural areas, to promote initiatives in favor of energies Clean, as well as harmonize electrical standards between the two countries.

It also provides for the exchange of expertise, technologies and best practices in network management and energy security, as well as strengthening human skills through joint training programs.

The agreement is part of the ambition to contribute to energy security, the diversification of supply sources and the examination of the implementation of an electrical interconnection project, making it possible to stabilize networks and to improve the supply of electricity.

On this occasion, Ms. Benali stressed that the signing of this memorandum of understanding marks the start of a new phase of cooperation between the two ministries, but also between the institutions of the public and private sectors in Mauritania and Morocco, in The key sectors of renewable energies, green hydrogen and sustainable development.

The two neighboring countries are full of assets and potentials likely to promote the development of many projects capable of promoting sustainable economic and social development, and consolidating regional integration between European and African continents, with all that follows In terms of strengthening Africa’s positioning in the world economy, she told the press.

The Mauritanian Minister for his part said that the agreement highlights the privileged fraternal relations between Mauritania and Morocco, noting that the common objective is to hoist bilateral relations at the level of the aspirations of the heads of state of the two countries , His Majesty King Mohammed VI and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.

Mr. Ould Khaled, on a working visit to the Kingdom, has in this context put forward the enormous potential available to the two countries, allowing them to position themselves in leaders in the field of renewable energies and electricity.

The discussions between the two parties also addressed major strategic projects such as the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline as well as those of renewable energies, especially in the green hydrogen sector. The two ministers, in this regard, said that bilateral relations find their foundation in a common vision oriented towards sustainable development and the promotion of the place of Africa, as a continent with the exceptional potential of growth and prosperity.

The working visit of the Mauritanian Minister is part of the dynamics of consultation and coordination between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, with the objective of intensifying bilateral relations and developing them in accordance with the high orientations of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.

The event has gathered several officials from the two countries, including the Director General of the National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), the CEO of the Moroccan Sustainable Energy Agency (MASEN), The secretaries general of the departments of energy transition and sustainable development, and the Director General of Electricity and Renewable Energies in Mauritania.
