An albino turtle was born in Drôme

An albino red belly turtle was born in a tropical Drôme reserve. It is an extremely rare phenomenon, “according to them.

An albino red belly turtle was born on the Crocodiles farm in Pierrelatte in the Drôme, a “rare” event, announced this Thursday, January 23, the tropical reserve in a press release.

The aquatic species, originally from rivers and swamps in Australia and New Guinea, is “relatively common in captivity”, explains the establishment, but “the birth of an albinos individual is an extremely rare phenomenon, representing a real singularity in the within this species “.

“The probability of an albino turtle birth is even extremely rare,” explains the manager of the zoological pole of Park Antoine Soler to 3.

“Suitable care” for animals

The crocodile farm promises a “very special attention” for the baby turtle, sensitive to light.

“Caregivers will ensure that it will offer him adapted care, taking into account his specific needs, especially in terms of lighting and visual health,” said the crocodiles in France 3.

“It cannot expose themselves to light. In the park, there are means of breeding without exposing them to UV,” continues the head of the animal zoological pole of the park to our colleagues.

The animal was born at the same time as eleven other turtles. But, don't worry, “everyone will have the same attention and the same surveillance during the first days,” says Antoine Soler.

Albinism is a genetic disease characterized by the total or partial absence of pigmentation in the skin, eyes and scales.

In May 2022, a Swiss zoo hosted the birth of a giant turtle of the Albinos galapagos, the first observed in captivity or in the wild for this species.
