The College of Bernardins receives for this round table of the “War and Peace” cycle Michel Boyancé and Pierre de Lauzun, philosophers, for a debate on the notion of “just war”. As part of the reflections formerly carried by the Observatory of Modernity, the College of Bernardins offers in this year 2024-2025 a cycle of reflection on the theme “War and Peace”. Western societies have long been used to living in instinctive confidence in the future. The new geopolitical, ecological, migratory crises, and the emergence of new powers seem to have shaken the hopes aroused in the 1990s. Stakeholders: Michel Boyancé is a philosopher and teacher-researcher. His research focused in particular on the concept of “common good”. He was dean of the Institute of Philosophy compared to Paris, from 1999 to 2020. He is also a member of the Catholic Academy of France. He is the author of numerous works and articles relating to questions of ethics and anthropology. Pierre de Lauzun is a senior official and essayist. Specialist in financial issues, he entered the service of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing in 1975. He then continued his career in the banking sector, working in particular for CIC and Goldman Sachs groups. In addition to these activities, it conducts an essayist activity. Its reflections seek in particular to develop a Christian conception of economics and finance. In 2024 he published the just war (Boleine).
