Morocco has allocated 42 billion dirhams for the extension and development of several airports by 2030. Between 2005 and 2024, the number of air passengers in Morocco increased by 322%, from 7.7 million to 32.5 million.
Connected airports, modern infrastructure, low-cost tickets and a diverse offering. Who says better? Morocco is banking on its air traffic and is working hard to make it a strategic model, especially with preparations for the 2030 World Cup. The Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, revealed that the number of air passengers is increased from 7.7 million in 2005 to 15 million in 2010, exceeding 18 million in 2016, reaching 25 million in 2019 before the pandemic, then 32.5 million in 2024.
During a presentation before the Committee on Infrastructure, Energy, Mines and Environment in the House of Representatives last Tuesday, Kayouh indicated that “the air transport sector recorded a notable improvement in its performance as well as a reduction in ticket prices, thus contributing to the growth of international air traffic”.
According to the minister’s remarks: a budget of 42 billion dirhams is planned for airport expansion projects by 2030. The future vision includes in particular the development of Casablanca airport in order to increase its capacity to 44 million passengers per year.
Furthermore, a new terminal will be built at Rabat-Salé airport to accommodate 4 million passengers, while Fez airport will be developed to increase its capacity to 5 million passengers per year.
-This vision also includes the improvement of the airports of Tangier and Agadir, with the objective of increasing their respective capacity to 7 million passengers per year, as well as the extension of the airports of Tetouan and Marrakech to reach a capacity of 900,000 passengers per year. year, while further developing Marrakech airport to accommodate up to 16 million passengers per year.
In the context of this strategic vision, the minister mentioned support for the development plan of Royal Air Maroc, by expanding its fleet and strengthening its competitiveness through an ambitious program for the acquisition of modern aircraft with varied capacities. This will meet the needs of short, medium and long haul flights.
This strategy also includes supporting the rapid growth of air traffic through the modernization and expansion of the main Moroccan airports, such as those of Marrakech, Tangier, Agadir, Fez and Rabat, in order to make them regional hubs of reference. This will require an increase in their capacity to meet the growth in passenger traffic.
In addition, the development of domestic transport will be strengthened by encouraging the opening of new lines aimed at opening up remote regions and supporting their economic development. Thus, Casablanca airport will continue to be positioned as a gateway connecting Morocco to the rest of the world, with the opening of direct lines to the main strategic airports.
