After 20 years of waiting, the pace is accelerating on the side of Porte de Montreuil. After an agreement reached in July 2023, the project to transform this road junction which connects Paris to Bagnolet and Montreuil has started its active phase. Temporary arrangements have been installed for pedestrians and bicycles, announced Monday January 20, 2025 the deputy (PS) of the City in charge of town planning Lamia El-Araje, who confirmed the filing of the planning permission to our colleagues from Parisian. The urban development work will take place between 2026 and 2030.
Temporary pedestrian and bicycle paths
Currently, traffic on the current roundabout has been redesigned to secure the crossing by bike or on foot of the place. A cycle path and transitional pedestrian paths have been installed inside the central ring which overlooks the ring road.
Crossings protected by traffic lights have been installed at Avenue de Porte de Montreuil and Rue de Paris to reach the central ring.
The ring road soon to be covered
In 2026, work to develop the new public spaces will begin. A global project costed at 220 million euros. After years of heated debates, the municipal majority agreed on a common project: to eliminate the immense road roundabout current. The ring road will be completely covered at the level of the central ring, which will be transformed into a densely planted 3.5 ha square for pedestrians and cyclists. It will aim to “create continuity between Paris and Montreuil”.
-The future square will include 1.5 ha of green areas. 704 new trees will be planted, 241 maintained, 36 transplanted elsewhere. 19 will have to be slaughtered, according to The Parisian. To liven up the premises, the Emmaüs recycling plant already present will be reinstalled in a new space located on the square, on the Paris side. On the Montreuil side, a food hall, cafes, a hotel residence and offices will see the light of day, supported by the real estate developer Nexity.
A flea market always discovered
Cycle paths will surround the perimeter of the square in both directions of traffic. As for cars, they will occupy the outer edge of the square, most of the time on two lanes only (compared to three currently).
The flea market, for its part, will be redeveloped, equipped and vegetatedbut will remain outdoors, in accordance with the wishes of traders. The Environmentalists, who supported their demands, were opposed to the idea of installing the market under a hall. L'bridge building initially planned, had also been deleted from the final roadmap in the face of environmental opposition. An acoustic insulation work will be carried out instead, specifies the Parisian Study, Project Management and Development Company (Semapa).
