State Councilor Pierre Maudet has made the creation of a cantonal public health fund one of his legislative priorities. However, a major legal obstacle remains: it will be necessary to obtain approval from the Federal Office of Public Health. No easy feat.

But the magistrate thinks that there is an opening to win his bet strewn with pitfalls, as he himself suggests. Because if projects multiply in Bern to slow down the rise in premiums, they fail one after the other.

To give ourselves every chance, the head of the Department of Health and Mobility has mandated a group of experts to study the conditions necessary for creating such insurance… associated with a healthcare network. Because it is he who can generate savings and not the fund.

Luck favors the bold. Pierre Maudet would be wrong not to step into the breach, however tiny it may be. The passivity of the health sector speaks in its favor. Costs related to health insurance too.

These soared this year to reach 100 billion francs, compared to 37.5 billion in 1996! An explosion which has repercussions on the contributions of policyholders whose purchasing power continues to decrease…

In Geneva, the burden of premiums has become too heavy for more than a third of them, who receive a subsidy. Which will cost the State 712.9 million francs in 2025.

Despite this public assistance, a fifth of the population forgoes care. When these people have no other choice but to consult, their treatment often turns out to be much more expensive than if they had anticipated.

It is really urgent to try things to stop this vicious spiral. Pierre Maudet is working on it. His initiative deserves to be praised.
