Cassis emerges empty-handed from a meeting with his Syrian counterpart

Swiss sanctions in force against Syria are being maintained “for the moment”, declared Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis. He came out empty-handed on Wednesday from a meeting with his Syrian counterpart on the sidelines of the WEF.

The foreign minister of the Syrian transitional government, Assad Hassan Al Shibani, is considered a terrorist in Switzerland. Such sanctions and others will certainly not be relaxed “for the moment,” Mr. Cassis told the press.

The Ticino resident expects concrete facts from the transitional government from the Islamist group HTC. The answers about an inclusive transition process were “very vague,” he said.

Mr. Cassis also met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, with whom he discussed the next steps of the ceasefire as well as the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Asked whether laws banning UNRWA would come into force in Israel at the end of the month, Cassis said the new laws should not prevent the agency from continuing its work.

The Ticino was also due to meet Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa, but the latter canceled his visit at the last minute.
